Birds in the Garden: Creating and Enjoying a Bird Oasis

From West Cook Wild Ones:

Meet Chicago's Bird Whisperer Pam Karlson and Learn Her Secrets!

Inviting birds into gardens by creating healthy habitat is a joyful way to connect with nature and help support bird populations. This presentation features Pam’s photographs of the Chicago bird garden she created and its bird visitors, illustrating how it’s possible to attract over 100 bird species.

Tips include landscape enhancements, practices and plant selection, with an emphasis on natives and nativars. Chicagoland’s importance along the migratory route, bird species diversity, habitat, diet/foraging, nesting, supplemental support and citizen science will also be discussed. Doug Tallamy’s latest book “Nature’s Best Hope: A New Approach to Conservation That Starts in Your Yard”, includes Pam’s city garden, exemplifying the power of urban lots.

Duneslands of Illinois: Rare, Hardy, and Threatened

Duneslands of Illinois: Rare, Hardy, and Threatened

From West Cook Wild Ones:

Learn about Illinois' specialized dunes habitats with Kathleen Marie Garness, Scientific Affiliate with Field Museum and Morton Arboretum.

Illinois' duneslands are the geologically youngest natural areas in our region. They are also under intense pressure from development as well as erosion. Hosah Park is part of an incredibly rare and precious ecological area earlier called the Waukegan Moorlands, described in detail as early as 1927 by ecologist Herman Silas Pepoon. It was recently designated a Wetland of International Importance by the RAMSAR Convention. In its 23 acres there are more than 220 native species of native plants. Representing just .5% of the total area, it holds 30% of the species! It is also an eBird hotspot with over 160 species of birds recorded from it since 1979. Kathleen's presentation will highlight both the ubiquitous and the most rare, and describe many of the unique adaptations and faunal relationships that have allowed them to survive in such a harsh environment.

About the Speaker

Kathleen Garness is author of the Field Museum's Common Plant Families of the Chicago Region and the Dunesland Habitat Guide. A woodland habitat guide is in the works. As steward of one of the Chicago region's highest quality duneland sites, she has had the opportunity to become familiar with these rare and hardy species that call our lakeshores their home.

Enjoy a sampling of Ms. Garness' work:

Ms. Garness' botanical illustrations were featured by the North American Orchid Conservation Center and can be viewed by following the link.

Outdoors While Black: Unpacking History, Reframing Safety, and Taking Action

A VIRTUAL SCREENING EVENT + DISCUSSION
Co-presented by One Earth Film Festival and Environmentalists of Color

FILM DESCRIPTIONS: “This Land” is a short film that tells the story of land access told through a journey of inclusion and empowerment. Runner and filmmaker Faith E. Briggs used to run through the streets of Brooklyn every morning. Now, she’s running 150 miles through three U.S. National Monuments that lay in the thick of the controversy around public lands.

Wildlife ecology professor and birder J. Drew Lanham has written “Nine Rules for the Black Birdwatcher,” “Birding While Black,” and “The Home Place: Memoirs of a Colored Man’s Love Affair with Nature.” He will be featured in short films, including “Behind the Binoculars,” which shows his care for what’s behind the binoculars (the people) as well as what’s in front of them (the birds).

Stay for thought-provoking post-film discussion to unpack history, reframe safety and learn about opportunities for action with filmmaker Faith Briggs, film subject Drew Lanham, and Chicago-area environmentalists of color:

  • Olatunji Oboi Reed is the President & CEO of The Equiticity Racial Equity Movement. He is a racial equity tactician, working at the intersection of community, culture, and health.

  • Candace Clark: Kandeaux the Farm Plug is a regenerative practitioner, pursuing a PhD in Integrative Development and Public Policy.

  • Facilitator: Kyra Woods (she/her) works with the Sierra Club Illinois Chapter as the Ready for 100 Chicago campaign coordinator. She believes that Chicago’s monumental commitment can lead to significant economic, health, and environmental benefits for residents if steeped in the values of racial equity, justice, and community leadership.
