ETHEL Combines Music with Environmental Images

By Lisa Biehle Files

ETHEL, a post-modern quartet known for its imaginative programming, will present, "ETHEL's Documerica," at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb.20, in Dominican University's Lund Auditorium, 7900 W. Division St., River Forest. With multiple-screen video projections and original music by some of today's top composers, ETHEL's Documerica is a multimedia concert experience and meditation on America's relationship with its land, resources and people.

ETHEL incorporates more than 3,000 photographs commissioned in the 1970s by the Environmental Protection Agency for a comprehensive exhibit called "Project Documerica" with the music of today. Throughout the program, the music is in constant dialogue with the projections of strip mining, political protest, pollution, fashion trends, natural beauty and urban decline, bringing an era fraught with social tension into the present.

The performance features original compositions by James “Kimo” Williams, named as one of Chicago Magazine’s “Chicagoans of the Year in 2006.” Other musicians whose compositions are featured include Kip Jones, Jerod Impichchaachaaha Tate, Ulysses Owens, Jr., Tema Watstein, Dorothy Lawson, Ralph Farris and Mary Ellen Childs.

Tickets are $26. For tickets and more information, visit events.dom.edu or contact the Dominican University box office at (708) 488-5000.
