Just 415 carbon dioxide molecules per one million air molecules are driving global warming, impacting our health and safety. In Illinois, vehicular exhaust is the single-biggest source of carbon dioxide emissions. Learn about new research into the effects of a greater shift toward electric vehicles in the Chicago area and about local climate-friendly transportation initiatives. Gain a perspective on the outsized role of carbon dioxide in our changing climate by hearing about new artwork visualizing this invisible threat in our air.

Melody Geraci is Deputy Executive Director at Active Transportation Alliance, where she is a top-level thought leader and strategic manager in pursuit of the organization’s vision that all people in Chicagoland have access to a safe, seamless, convenient and connected transportation environment that is abundant with walking, bicycling and transit options. She also oversees Active Trans’ efforts to become a more equity-centered organization.
Daniel Horton is an Assistant Professor of Earth & Planetary Sciences at Northwestern University. He leads Northwestern’s Climate Change Research Group, which studies everything from extreme weather events, to the co-benefits and tradeoffs of green infrastructure and transportation initiatives, to the evolution of Earth’s climate system through geologic time, and the potential habitability of planets outside our solar system.
Andrew S. Yang works across the visual arts, the sciences, and natural history to explore the cosmological flux. Exhibitions include the 14th Istanbul Biennial (2015), Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, (2016), the Spencer Museum of Art (2019), and the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History (2020). His writing and research appear in journals including Art Journal, Leonardo, Biological Theory, and Antennae.
This program is presented in conjunction with Third Coast Disrupted: Artists: Artists + Scientists on Climate Taking place at Columbia College Chicago's Glass Curtain Gallery. The exhibition is the culmination of a yearlong conversation between artists and scientists centered on climate change impacts and solutions in the Chicago region.
