Earth Lounge Environmental Book Club

From Oak Park Public Library:

Explore the curiosities and complexities of nature, environmentalism, and sustainability through fiction and nonfiction literature in the Earth Lounge Environmental Book Discussion Group, held the last Wednesday of the month every other month beginning in January 2024.

Islands of Abandonment: nature rebounding in the post-human landscape by Cal Flyn explores the places where nature is flourishing in our absence. Flyn visits the eeriest and most desolate places on Earth that due to war, disaster, disease, or economic decay, have been abandoned by humans. What she finds every time is an "island" of teeming new life: nature has rushed in to fill the void faster and more thoroughly than even the most hopeful projections of scientists. The book is a tour through these new ecosystems, in all their glory, as sites of unexpected environmental significance, where the natural world has reasserted its wild power and promise.

In We Are the Weather, Jonathan Safran Foer explores the central global dilemma of our time in a deeply personal, and urgent new way. The task of saving the planet will involve a great reckoning with ourselves, he posits―with our all-too-human reluctance to sacrifice immediate comfort for the sake of the future. We have, he reveals, turned our planet into a farm for growing animal products, and the consequences are catastrophic. Only collective action will save our home and way of life.

From Oak Park Library:

On the occasion of the one-year anniversary for the Climate Ready community climate and sustainability plan, join Marcella Bondie Keenan, Chief Sustainability Officer of the Village of Oak Park, and Community Partners for conversations to answer these three questions:

  *   Where are we today on climate as a community? What climate, sustainability, and equity actions have we--individually and collectively--taken over the past year?
  *   Where do we want to go in the next year?
  *   How do we get there in a climate-just way?

Each discussion table will have a facilitator and recorder. Afterwards, the Village will publish a brief report celebrating our collective progress over the past year, and community strategies for moving forward in the next year.

OEFF: 'Elemental: Reimagine Wildfire' Screening

For Earth Day Mini Film Fest (April 19 to 23) from One Earth Film Fest and the City of Chicago:

Trip Jennings/2022/101 min/Climate Change, Conservation, Health & Environment

CHICAGO-AREA PREMIERE. FILM DESCRIPTION: “Elemental: Reimagine Wildfire” takes viewers on a journey with the top experts in the nation to better understand fire. We follow the harrowing escape from Paradise as the town ignited from wind-driven embers and burned within a few hours of the fire’s start. We visit fire labs where researchers torch entire houses to learn why some homes burn and others survive. We learn from Native Americans as they employ fire to benefit nature and increase community safety as they have for thousands of years. We follow researchers who work to understand the effects of climate on forests and the crucial role that natural forests play in storing vast amounts of carbon. Along the way we listen to people who have survived the deadliest fires to underscore the importance of this quest.

“Elemental: Reimagine Wildfire” won Best Director, Best Editing, and Jury Award Best Documentary at the Golden Gate International Film Festival in 2022. At the Valley Film Festival, the film earned the 10° Hotter Award in 2022.

The ice at the poles is melting, which will result in enormous rises in sea level and have major consequences for the world. But how fast will it really go?

In the Greenland ice sheet we can see our future. The film travels with pioneering glaciologists on their expeditions into the inland ice of Greenland. From One Earth Film Fest:

Sergio Mata’u Rapu and Elena Rapu/2018/70 min/Waste & Recycling, Climate Change, People & Cultures

Today, this tiny, barren island is experiencing an economic boon as tourism skyrockets. Yet the indigenous culture and the island’s fragile environment are suffering. In their own voices, these Rapanui reveal the reality of modern life and the actions they are taking to preserve their culture and environment amidst rapid development.
