'Carbon: The Unauthorized Biography' Virtual Watch Party

Daniella Ortega and Niobe Thompson/2022/86 min/Climate, Conservation, Energy, Built Environment, Historical Perspectives

FILM DESCRIPTION: With Carbon in the news every day, you might think you know everything about her. But you’d be wrong. This spectacular and surprisingly unorthodox documentary reveals the paradoxical story of the element that builds all life, and yet may end it all. Narrated in first person by Sarah Snook (Succession), “Carbon” tells of her birth in the violent core of an exploding star and of turbulent sagas through the fabric of our evolving Earth. Accompanied by celebrated scientists, unique animations and a stunning orchestral score, “Carbon” reminds us of our humble participation in the most extraordinary story in the universe.

Maggie Hart and Brittany Zampella/2023/19 min/Waste, Health, Justice

FILM DESCRIPTION: “A Good Neighbor” is a feature-length documentary about a Latina single mother’s fight against racism and climate change as she campaigns for city council in one of the nation’s most polluted zip codes.

Farhoud Meybodi/2023/48 min/Waste, Health, Justice, Built Environment, People & Cultures

FILM DESCRIPTION: Amidst a catastrophic plastic waste crisis in her hometown of Nairobi, Nzambi Matee risks everything to pioneer technology that transforms plastic waste into sustainable paving bricks. A former engineer in the oil and gas industry, Nzambi walked away from a lucrative career after a trip to the coastal city of Mombasa, where she discovered a sea of plastic bags and bottles in the crystal blue waters of the Indian Ocean. This inspired Nzambi to create a possible solution to the country’s plastics problem by converting waste into sustainable materials.

One Year In: Community Conversations on Climate Ready Oak Park

From Oak Park Library:

On the occasion of the one-year anniversary for the Climate Ready community climate and sustainability plan, join Marcella Bondie Keenan, Chief Sustainability Officer of the Village of Oak Park, and Community Partners for conversations to answer these three questions:

  *   Where are we today on climate as a community? What climate, sustainability, and equity actions have we--individually and collectively--taken over the past year?
  *   Where do we want to go in the next year?
  *   How do we get there in a climate-just way?

Each discussion table will have a facilitator and recorder. Afterwards, the Village will publish a brief report celebrating our collective progress over the past year, and community strategies for moving forward in the next year.

From street protests to the halls of Congress, these bold leaders fight to shift the narrative around climate, revealing the crisis as an opportunity to build a better society. The ice at the poles is melting, which will result in enormous rises in sea level and have major consequences for the world. But how fast will it really go?

In the Greenland ice sheet we can see our future. The film travels with pioneering glaciologists on their expeditions into the inland ice of Greenland. Webinar: Power Your Home with the Sun

From Illinois Solar Energy Association:

Join ISEA Solar Ambassador Peter Gorr as he tells his Solar Story!

Peter and his family decided to go solar because they felt they had a responsibility to future generations: "As parents and grandparents who accept and take the science of climate change seriously, we felt a responsibility to change those parts of our lifestyle that contribute to this most serious of all global crises." Besides the environmental benefits of going solar, Peter also knew it was the right decision financially, both for himself and the local economy - he used a local small business to sell and install the system.

The webinars are free and we welcome everyone. Please share the good news about solar with your friends and family!

Damon Gameau/2019/92 min/Environmental & Social Justice, People & Culture, Climate Change

September 8 – October 30, 2020
Glass Curtain Gallery – Columbia College Chicago
1104 S. Wabash Ave., 1st Floor, Chicago
Gallery Hours: Mon–Fri, 9 am – 5 pm
Gallery capacity is 10 visitors. Masks are required.
colum.edu/thirdcoast and ThirdCoastDisrupted.org

An exhibition of new artworks culminating a yearlong conversation between artists and scientists centered on climate change impacts and solutions in the Chicago region.

Through science-inspired sculpture, painting, collage and more, the artworks examine local impacts—happening here and now—ranging from extreme heat to flooding to habitat loss, and more. They also shine light on local solutions underway, like "cool roofs," nature-based approaches to slowing stormwater, and backyard habitat restoration. Some imagine future possibilities.

Third Coast Disrupted is based on the notion that art can connect and engage with people on an emotional level. It can pique curiosity, be unexpected, tactile, interactive, evocative, and memorable. It can slow people down, inspire them to reflect, move them to talk to each other -- and spur them to act.

This project is a collaboration between Columbia College Chicago, DePaul University's Institute for Nature and Culture, and Terracom.
